12 persistent symptoms that may signal cancer — and when to act

A symptom does not need to be severe before it is taken seriously. Anything that is persistent, unexplained, worsening, or clearly outside a person’s normal health pattern warrants appropriate medical evaluation. For severe symptoms — significant bleeding, difficulty breathing, severe chest pain, or sudden neurological changes — urgent care should be sought without delay.

As the guidance puts it: “The goal is not to live in fear of cancer. The goal is to notice persistent changes, seek appropriate medical advice, follow recommended screening guidelines, and give yourself the best opportunity for early detection when a serious condition is present.”

Knowing what is normal for your body makes it easier to recognize when something has changed. If something unusual does not go away, the recommended course of action is straightforward: talk with a healthcare professional and find out what is really causing it.
