12 physical warning signs that may warrant a cancer check

Cancer-related fatigue goes beyond ordinary tiredness. It can persist despite adequate sleep, and everyday tasks that were once easy may suddenly feel unusually difficult. Possible mechanisms include anemia, inflammation, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal changes, or the body’s immune response.

Persistent, unexplained, or progressively worsening pain — in the abdomen, chest, back, bones, or pelvis — also belongs in this category. The concern is not pain itself, but a pattern that is unusual, continues without explanation, worsens over time, or is accompanied by other symptoms.

Lumps, skin changes and unusual bleeding: visible signals the body sends

A new lump, thickened area, or swelling anywhere on the body — breast, neck, abdomen, armpit, or groin — deserves evaluation. Many lumps are completely harmless cysts or benign growths, but only a medical assessment can determine what a persistent or growing lump represents.

Skin changes carry their own set of warning signs: a new or changing mole, a sore that does not heal, unusual bleeding, persistent itching, or shifts in color or texture. For moles specifically, changes in asymmetry, borders, color, diameter, or overall evolution are considered particularly significant.

Unexpected bleeding — blood in the stool or urine, coughing or vomiting blood, or unusual vaginal bleeding — should never be automatically assumed to be harmless. The source and pattern of the bleeding matter, and prompt medical assessment may be necessary.

Bowel habits, cough, swallowing and digestive symptoms: changes that persist

Persistent changes in bowel habits — ongoing constipation or diarrhea, narrower stools, abdominal discomfort, or blood in the stool — should not be dismissed even though they have many possible causes, including hemorrhoids, irritable bowel syndrome, and inflammatory bowel disease.
