
Most fruit flies lay their eggs exclusively in rotting or overripe fruit. The female SWD, however, is equipped with a serrated egg-laying organ that allows her to pierce the skin of perfectly fresh, ripe fruit. Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and cherries are all potential targets.
Once the eggs are laid inside the intact berry, they hatch into the small white larvae seen in the videos — hidden inside fruit that looks completely normal from the outside.
A fly that evolved to beat food safety
The Spotted Wing Drosophila is distinct from common fruit flies because its serrated egg-laying organ evolved specifically to breach the skin of intact, healthy fruit. This makes it unusually difficult to detect at the point of sale, since infested berries show no visible external damage. The larvae develop entirely inside the fruit before hatching.
Salt water and osmosis: why a hypertonic soak flushes the larvae out
The salt-water method works through a basic biological process: osmosis. When strawberries are submerged in heavily salted water, the surrounding liquid becomes what is known as a hypertonic environment — a solution far more concentrated than the fluids inside the larvae.

Unable to breathe properly in the salty water, the larvae instinctively crawl out of the berry and move toward the surface in search of air. The reaction is a survival response, not a chemical reaction caused by the salt itself.
Plain tap water produces no such effect. Because it is not concentrated enough to disturb the larvae, they remain hidden inside the fruit — which explains why a standard rinse under the faucet does not reveal them.
