For several seconds, movement was impossible. The shape looked unmistakably like a tiny creature tucked beneath the fabric, and the thought of simply leaving the room felt entirely reasonable.
Photographs first, then a careful touch — and still nothing moved
The brightest light in the room was switched on. Several photographs followed, each zoomed in on the mysterious object. The pale extensions bore a striking resemblance to insect legs, yet something was off: nothing moved.
A cautious touch of the blanket produced no reaction at all. The object stayed completely still. That stillness was the first crack in the theory that something alive was hiding there.
Young roots, not legs — a seed beginning to germinate
Picking the object up and holding it under the light changed everything. Its surface was dry and textured, and the thin extensions, on closer inspection, were soft and threadlike rather than rigid.
The recognition came suddenly: it was a seed that had begun to germinate. What had looked so much like legs were actually young roots pushing outward in search of moisture — one of the most ordinary events in the natural world, playing out in an entirely unexpected place.
How it arrived under the blanket remained unclear. It may have been carried in on clothing, or perhaps dropped accidentally from a nearby plant.
