Some households need to wash sheets more frequently, roughly every three to four days. This applies to people who sweat heavily during the night, sleep with pets, eat in bed, have allergies, or have sensitive skin. Washing sheets sooner is also advisable when someone in the home has been ill.
As a general principle, “there is no single schedule that works perfectly for every household.” Once a week is a solid starting point, but individual circumstances should guide the final decision.
Why bedding gets dirty faster than it looks
Even when sheets appear clean, they accumulate sweat, body oils, dead skin cells, and dust with every night of use. People who sweat heavily, have pets, suffer from allergies, or have sensitive skin face a faster buildup, making their washing needs different from the average household.
Pillowcases need changing every three to seven days
Pillowcases deserve particular attention because they are in direct contact with the face and hair every night. A wash every three to seven days is the recommended guideline for most people.
Those with oily skin, allergies, or a tendency to sweat at night should change their pillowcases more often. Even when the rest of the bedding does not yet need washing, a fresh pillowcase can make the entire bed feel noticeably cleaner.
Duvets, blankets and mattress protectors: a longer cycle
Other bedding items can go longer between washes. Duvet covers generally need washing every one to two weeks, while blankets can wait two to four weeks.
