Carotenoids in the hen’s feed, not nutrition, drive yolk color
The pigments responsible for a deep-orange yolk are called carotenoids — compounds found naturally in certain plants. When hens eat foods rich in these pigments, such as grass, alfalfa, or marigold petals, their yolks take on a noticeably darker hue.
