The viral circle-counting test that claims to detect narcissists

The challenge is straightforward: count how many individual circles you can distinguish. Some people identify the shapes almost immediately, while others need more time to separate the overlapping lines — a difference that makes the puzzle feel personal and worth sharing.

‘You’re a narcissist’ — the bold claim driving millions of shares

The image circulates online with an attention-grabbing caption: “The number of circles you see will tell you if you are a narcissist.” That single line is largely responsible for the puzzle’s viral momentum, prompting users to compare their answers with friends and family.

According to the viral explanation, people who spot more circles tend to focus on fine details, while those who see fewer are said to take in the bigger picture naturally. The contrast between these two responses is presented as a window into personality — specifically, into narcissistic tendencies.

Optical illusions and personality: a long-running trend

Personality quizzes built around visual perception have circulated online for years, regularly going viral by linking everyday observations to psychological traits. While some perception tests are used in legitimate cognitive research, the vast majority of social media versions — including this one — are not grounded in validated psychological methodology.

No scientific backing behind the personality diagnosis

Despite its bold framing, the test is not a scientifically validated method for identifying narcissism or diagnosing any personality trait. No clinical or psychological authority is cited in support of the claim linking circle counts to narcissistic behaviour.

Visual perception puzzles of this kind measure how the brain processes overlapping shapes — a function influenced by attention, familiarity with optical illusions, and individual differences in visual processing. None of these factors map reliably onto personality diagnoses.
