Those Tiny White Worms in Your Trash Are Probably Maggots

Where you place the bin also makes a difference. Keeping outdoor garbage cans in a shaded spot can slow decomposition and reduce the odors that attract flies. For particularly pungent food scraps, some households freeze them until garbage collection day, which both reduces odors and prevents fly access before disposal.

If maggots keep reappearing after the bin has been cleaned, the source may lie elsewhere. Recycling containers, compost bins, pet food, pet waste, fruit left on the counter, or damp organic material under appliances can all serve as breeding grounds. Finding and eliminating that secondary source is more effective than repeatedly addressing the symptoms.

Those pale, wriggling creatures in the trash are almost always maggots — a routine part of the fly life cycle that found an opportune location. Removing the infested waste, scrubbing the bin thoroughly, letting it dry, and keeping future food waste tightly sealed breaks the cycle at every stage.
