Toilet lid up or down? What the science says about bathroom hygiene

Storing toothbrushes and personal care items in a closed cabinet or on the opposite side of the bathroom from the toilet limits their contact with any particles that do escape. Regularly wiping down frequently touched surfaces such as countertops and faucet handles adds another layer of protection.

Ensuring the bathroom is properly ventilated — through an extractor fan or an open window — helps clear airborne particles from the space more quickly. Combining all three habits provides a more complete response to the toilet plume issue than relying on lid-closing alone.

Closing the toilet lid before flushing is a worthwhile habit, but it works best as part of a broader routine: storing personal items away from the toilet, cleaning surfaces regularly, and keeping the bathroom well ventilated.
