The object’s rounded form and vivid color made it feel entirely out of place. Nothing about it matched the surrounding plants, and its very strangeness was enough to make a calm afternoon feel suddenly uncertain.
When the imagination fills what knowledge cannot
Standing still and staring, the narrator’s mind began generating explanations — none of them reassuring. “My imagination had simply filled the gap in my knowledge with the worst possibilities,” they later reflected. It is a familiar human response: when we cannot name something, we tend to fear it.
The growth looked harmless enough on the surface, yet its unfamiliarity was disorienting. The ordinary garden had become, for a moment, an unfamiliar place — not because anything had actually changed, but because one small detail resisted easy explanation.
A closer look points toward fungus
Moving in for a careful examination, the narrator ruled out the possibility that the object had been placed there deliberately. Its appearance suggested a natural growth, and the most reasonable conclusion seemed to be fungus.
Fungi are well known for appearing suddenly in garden environments when soil is damp and conditions are favorable. Their range of colors, shapes, and textures is wide enough that even experienced gardeners can be caught off guard. A vivid red specimen emerging overnight is unusual, but not outside the bounds of what nature produces.
Rather than disturbing the growth, the narrator chose to leave it in place and observe it — a decision that shifted the encounter from alarm to attentiveness.
