Many households serve pre-washed grapes straight from the bag, assuming the label means the fruit is ready to eat. It isn’t necessarily so. Food safety guidance recommends rinsing fresh fruit under running water before eating, even when packaging states it has already been washed.
What ‘pre-washed’ actually means — and what it doesn’t
When grapes are labeled pre-washed, they have been rinsed during processing to remove visible dirt, dust, and some surface residues. That step, however, does not make the fruit sterile or guarantee that all pesticide residues have been eliminated.
