From that point on, he found himself automatically scanning the floor before stepping inside, pausing at the drain, noticing damp patches that had previously gone unregistered. Every dark mark on the floor briefly demanded attention. A strand of hair became suspicious until examined closely.
What the experience illustrated, in his account, is how quickly one unexpected discovery can disrupt the sense of predictability that familiarity creates. We move through the same rooms every day without genuinely looking at them. A single anomaly — particularly a living one — is enough to make the brain recalibrate entirely.
