Those Tiny White Worms in Your Trash Are Probably Maggots

~1 day
In warm conditions, fly eggs can hatch into larvae in roughly a day — which is why maggots can seem to appear out of nowhere.

Four steps to eliminate maggots safely

The first move is to tie the infested garbage bag securely and take it outside rather than carrying an open or leaking bag through the home. If the bag is damaged, place it inside a second sturdy bag before moving it. Keep children and pets away from the area during the process, and wear gloves when handling contaminated waste.

Once the garbage is removed, inspect the entire bin — bottom, inside walls, lid, rim, handles, corners, and any cracks or seams. Remove visible residue, then wash the container thoroughly with an appropriate household disinfecting cleaner, following the product’s directions. Public-health and local-authority guidance specifically recommends cleaning bins after they are emptied.

One important safety note: never mix bleach with ammonia, acids, or other cleaning products. After washing, allow the bin to dry completely before inserting a new bag. A dry container is less appealing to flies and helps keep odors down.

According to one local authority, there is no evidence that maggots themselves cause health problems — but flies and contaminated waste should still be handled hygienically throughout the process.

Keeping flies out: prevention that actually works

A tightly closed lid is one of the simplest barriers between flies and food waste. Bags should be tied securely — especially when they contain meat, fish, pet waste, or other strongly scented materials — rather than left open inside the bin.

Frequency matters too. The longer decomposing food remains accessible, the more opportunity flies have to find it. Removing food waste before the bag is completely full, particularly in hot weather, reduces that window significantly.
