He found a living leech on his girlfriend’s bathroom floor

Leeches: a diverse and adaptable group

Leeches are segmented worms found across a wide range of moist environments, from freshwater ponds and streams to damp soil. There are hundreds of known species, and not all of them feed on blood — many prey on small invertebrates instead. Their highly flexible bodies allow them to contract to a fraction of their extended length, which can make identification difficult at first glance.

How does a leech end up inside a bathroom?

Identifying the creature answered one question and immediately created several others. The most pressing: where had it come from?

The narrator considered the plumbing first. The creature had been found near a damp area of the bathroom, making the drain a natural suspect. But that alone could not confirm the route. Small organisms can also be transported into homes accidentally — on wet footwear, clothing, bags, outdoor equipment, or plants that have been near ponds, streams, flooded ground, or wet gardens.

Without knowing the exact species or tracing its precise path, no single explanation could be ruled in or out. A thorough second inspection of the bathroom found no additional creatures near the drain, along the walls, beneath the sink, or around the pipes. The leech was eventually removed, but the question of how it arrived was never completely resolved.

Bathrooms do, however, offer one thing many moisture-dependent organisms need: persistent damp conditions. Humidity after showers, wet floors, drains, and hidden pipe spaces can make bathrooms more hospitable to small animals than most other rooms in a home.

One small animal, one lasting change in how a room feels

The physical encounter was brief. The creature was removed, a second inspection found nothing else, and the bathroom returned to looking exactly as it always had. Psychologically, however, something had shifted.
