‘Pre-washed’ grapes still need a rinse before eating

Children and opened packages call for extra attention

Certain situations make rinsing especially worthwhile. If the bag has already been opened, if the grapes look dusty or sticky, or if they are being served to young children, an extra rinse is a simple precaution worth taking.

The broader principle from food safety guidance is consistent: washing fresh fruits under running water before eating is the recommended habit, regardless of what the packaging says.

The safest habit requires no special products and almost no time: a quick rinse under cool running water right before serving is all it takes to add a meaningful layer of food safety — whatever the label on the bag says.
